Challenge 15 Winner - Finn-Erik-Faale on 24 Nov 2009 by uwol admin

Challenge 15 / Year 3 - Animal Kingdom
Winner - 'Barnacle Kingdom' by Finn-Erik Faale
Nationality : Norwegian

"It was three years since my boat Flora was last time set on shore.
The animal life on her underwater hull gave me the idea for this video.
These animals have a great impact on the the boat's sailing performance. Due to a lack of underwater housing, I have used a small aquarium from my childhood. Some underwater shots are taken on the seashore with the camera inside the aquarium, others with the camera outside and the barnacles inside the aquarium."

Challenge 13 Winner - Mike Beckett on 11 Jul 2009 by uwol admin

 Challenge 13 / Year 3 - Habitat
Winner - 'Order on a giant scale' by Mike Beckett
Nationality : Northern Irish

I decided to try something different for "Order and Chaos". UWOL
normally makes you think of animals or birds, but the star of my film
is a rather magnificent collection of rocks - The Giant's Causeway, on
the north coast of Ireland. The columns of remarkably regular rocks
are the stars of this video, and they provide the order. Mankind, in
the form of thousands of tourists, provides the chaos.

Challenge 11 winner - Milhali Moore on 25 Nov 2008 by uwol admin

Challenge 11 / Year 2 - Habitat
Winner - 'A Walk in the Park' by Mihali Moore
Nationality : British

When the theme was announced for this challenge I knew exactly what I wanted to film: Red Deer rutting. The weather was good, I had a rough story in my head and the timing was right...or so I thought. When I began shooting it became apparent that it was too early to see a full rut between the stags. Therefore I had to rethink my story. Luckily Richmond Park is teaming with life and in the end I was spoilt for choice with the number of subjects. As the brief was to give an overview of a habitat, it ended up working out very well. I was luckily with the light in the early morning too!

Challenge X winner - Marj Atkins on 25 Sep 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge X / Year 2 - PSA
Winner - 'Free Me' by Marj Atkins
Nationality : South African

Tackling a PSA/commercial with little experience in the genre, as well as having to sell the idea to a non-profit organization was a pretty daunting task. There seemed to be something new to learn round every corner. However, my enthusiasm for the concept of UWOL X and FreeMe’s positive responses all down the line kept me motivated. My sincere thanks go to FreeMe for running with this. www.freeme.org.za

Challenge 9 winner - Mat Thompson on 08 Jul 2008 by uwol admin

Challenge 9 / Year 2 - Wildlife
Winner - 'The Heath' by Mat Thompson
Nationality : British

As filming experience's go, this was one of my best to date. The Adder is a rare and beautiful creature and fascinating to be around. Some useful background reading I managed to find where the snakes were most likely to be in the reserve. As long as my movements weren't to sharp they didn't mind my presence and apart from once when the female almost moved under my tripod I didn't feel bothered by them. It was all shot at my favourite reserve here in Essex with focal lengths of 50-200mm for the snake shots and an average working distance of about 1-2m. All in all I feel the piece came together well and I'm now hooked on the adder and snakes in general. I hope you enjoy my film!

Challenge 8 winnner - Marj Atkins on 01 May 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 8 / Year 2 - Transformation
Winner - 'Hidden Wonders' by Marj Atkins
Nationality : South African

The transformation that takes place during the life-cycle of a butterfly is truly remarkable so I had no hesitation in choosing the Acraea Horta as my subject. These are butterflies with a number of generations overlapping in time making it possible to find a complete cycle within three weeks. Being distasteful to predators, they are conspicuous in and around their larval host plant, the Kiggelaria Africana. There is a lot more to life than meets the eye and with the help of technology it is sometimes possible to see with greater clarity the wonders occurring unobtrusively in the natural world around us.

I hope you enjoy watching this educational documentary as much as I enjoyed making it.

Challenge 7 Winner - Per Johan Naesje on 05 Mar 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 7 / Year 2 - Adventure
Winner - 'Eagle has landed' by Per Johan Naesje
Nationality : Norwegian

The Eagle has landed is filmed in two different locations in our country. The eagle shot was filmed in Nord-Trøndelag while the footage with my talent Guttorm was shot in Skrukkelia, Hurdal near by Oslo.
I chose to film the Golden Eagle because in my opinion this is the most beautiful bird of pray. The film shows an adult male. I hope I succeeded to show how my big adventure  of filming this bird was by using my friend Guttorm as an actor.

Challenge 6 Winner - Markus Nord on 03 Jan 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 6 / Year 1 - Night
Winner - 'Isopod' by Markus Nord
Nationality : Swedish

During the cold winter mouth in Scandinavia a huge Isopod crawls up from deep water in the Baltic Sea. When the water temperature is
dropping to under 10 degree centigrade and get close to freezing you
are able to se them, but the best time during the day is after sunset.

This film is shot during 2-3 days, right after the first snow arrived in my home town on the east coast of Sweden. For this film I used a Canon XL2 with the stock lens + the wide angle x3 lens. For the UW shot I used a Gates housing with the stock lens, that lens is better for macro. I would like to thank Spheric Lounge for the music.

Challenge 5 Winners - Bruce Foreman/David Gemmel on 03 Jan 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 5 / Year 1 - Mammals
Joint Winners - 'Cinco' by Bruce Foreman &
'Australian Spirit'  by David Gemmel
Nationality : American and Australian

Bruce : This short video is a re-enactment of a real incident.  I ran into Mike one day and he told me about a bad fall he and his horse had taken, and how the horse, Cinco, stayed with him and brought him back.  For this entry I asked Mike if he would re enact his part of the incident and he agreed.  Cinco also did his part because he did not like Mike lying down on the ground.  In the video his ears are partially laid back indicating his unease with Mike being "down".

Challenge 4 Winner - Jeff Hendricks on 03 Jan 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 4 / Year 1 - Water
Winner - 'Touching generations' by Jeff Hendricks
Nationality : American

Todd Jezek plays the lonely, but nostalgic explorer Jeremiah McGregor as he narrates his last writings in his journals. He reminisces and wishes, writing letters that will never reach their recipients through the man made world. It is however, though the natural world, through the flow of water across the earth, that his message is carried, eventually to touch the generations beyond his lifetime. “Touching Generations” also stars Ryan Kraten as Jeremiah McGregor the great, great grandson of the former Jeremiah, with music by Slipstream.  Does water die or does it carry on for all the days of the earth?

Challenge 3 Winner - Rob Evans on 03 Jan 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 3 / Year 1 - The Wild
Winner - 'The Wild Within' by Rob Evans
Nationality : British

I'd seen the UWOL challenge and thought "Hey, I can give that a go!", so I got planning...   I was thinking along the lines of The Wild being man's domination over wilderness, and how what looks wild on the surface seems less so when you look harder. However, the bad weather came and prevented me from capturing the pictures I wanted. One afternoon while I was gardening, I got amazed at the colour and variety of miniature life everywhere. I had found my own Wild in my backyard! I set up a few lamps, a turntable and that was it, I was entranced for hours, picking up rocks and plantpots and searching for the life found within. It felt like discovering a completely new world.

Challenge 2 Winner - Mat Thompson on 03 Jan 2008 by uwol admin

 Challenge 2 / Year 1 - Recreation
Winner - 'The Fisher King' by Mat Thompson
Nationality : British

The kingfisher is a lifelong favourite of mine and spending time watching and filming this bird was a fantastic treat. Plenty of
research was needed to find a location that would yield successful results. I was also lucky enough to meet Colin 'the conductor'
who put on a great show as birds opposite. I edited the piece in
quite a light hearted way trying to make some interplay between
the two characters. I'll just let you decide who's the true fisher king.
Hope you enjoy my film!
