2008 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival Announces Official Selections
Cedar Rapids Independent Filmmakers brings you the 2008 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival, Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, at the Collins Road Theatres, 1462 Twix Town Road, Marion, Iowa. The festival will showcase the work of filmmakers from across the state and around the country, all with strong connections to Iowa. Eighty-eight films were submitted for consideration. A panel of judges awarded 40 with Official Selection status. These films will go on to compete for Gold and Silver Eddy Awards and the Audience Choice and Iowa Connection Eddys, which will be presented at a Saturday night ceremony.
Fairfax, Iowa filmmaker Kevin J Railsback submitted two films, both of which were picked as official selections of the 2008 Festival. His film, "Wild No More", was originally shot for the online film challenge UWOL. The Underwater Over Land Film Challenge or UWOL as it's more commonly referred to, is an opportunity for filmmakers from across the globe to create a film in a short amount of time based on a theme which they are given at the start of the challenge. "Wild No More" was filmed for the UWOL challenge theme "The Wild." In doing research for the film, Railsback learned that in a single generation 99% of the native prairie's were plowed under with the invention of the steel plow. " I wanted to remind Iowans of what we have lost and how important it is to protect the last remnants of wild Iowa that we have left" Railsback said. "Competition for Eddy Awards is tighter than ever before," said Eric Dean Freese, Communications Director. "The caliber of production this year is just remarkable."
The Official Selections represent a wide variety of features, shorts, documentaries, music videos, animations and experimental films at Student, Pro-Am and Professional levels. In addition to the screenings, three special filmmaking seminars will be held. Plans are still being finalized for these.
The Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival was created to provide a venue for Iowa filmmakers to screen their work for peers and general audiences. The organization's primary goals are to encourage Iowa independent filmmakers to continue improving their craft, to provide a place to specifically showcase Iowa-connected films, present a unique cultural event to the community, and to offer networking opportunities for the purpose of building the Iowa Filmmaking Industry. |
